Building essential skills

Foundations that support every subject

Strong literacy and numeracy skills help students understand, communicate and participate across the curriculum. Learning is carefully structured so that students can build knowledge progressively while applying it in meaningful ways.

How learning grows

  1. Literacy and communication

Reading, writing, speaking and listening with purpose

Students engage with a growing range of texts and ideas. They learn to read with understanding, write with clarity, communicate confidently and listen thoughtfully to the perspectives of others.

  2. Mathematics and problem-solving

    Understanding how and why

Mathematics is approached as more than a set of procedures. Students develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while learning to explain their thinking and apply mathematical ideas to different situations.

  3. Inquiry and discovery

    Questions lead to deeper learning

Students are encouraged to observe carefully, ask meaningful questions and investigate ideas. Science, social studies and interdisciplinary learning experiences help students understand relationships between people, places, systems and the natural world.

  4. Creativity and collaboration

Learning to create, contribute and work together

Creative experiences, discussion and group work give students opportunities to express themselves, consider different perspectives and contribute responsibly to shared outcomes.

  5. Growing responsibility

    Confidence develops through practice

Elementary students begin managing increasingly complex tasks, reflecting on their progress and taking greater responsibility for their choices, work and relationships.
